STUDENT SUPPORT COMPANY-Any experiences?

Was given some info from DS's school. As he is slightly behind in english, thought I would give them a call.

Having made an appointment for someone to come round, I then googled and was a bit worried by what I found. It sounds v expensive and DS is only 5 and a half. Think I should leave it a the moment and am thinking of cancelling.

Has anyone used this? Any good/bad experiences?

Definitely cancel now

There have been a few threads on here over the years, started one myself.
They are actually called The Student Support Centre and are basically a hard sell company, that get you to sign a very expensive contract for a few videos and workbooks. The contract is very difficult to get out of and you will be paying for years.
They pay the schools a small amount for sending out the letters.

You would be better off in the long run getting a tutor in for a while, which would cost about £25 an hour, but you can cancel at anytime and you will be in total control.

Primary schools should not condone the actions of these companies. I would complain to the governors. Surely it is up to the school to correct any problems your child has?

Don't use them, they are a lot of money and the school should be giving your child the support they need. If you want to do more, the idea of a tutor in a year or so would be more sensible. You could even split the cost with another parent.

A much cheaper alternative is 'Primary Home Tutor'. They produce monthly material for you to work on at home with your child and are cheaper than a home tutor. They have a website (google 'Primary Home Tutor') which you can subscribe through and you can cancel at any time just by clicking on a button on the website.
