Can you give me any tips for encouraging my DS to write?

DS is in reception and has been sent home with his name written on a piece of card and lots of sheets of tracing paper. No pressure, just asked to encourage him to write his name. DS has NO interest in even trying. I'm not overly worried and believe it will come in time but having not gone through this with DD I just wondered if there was anything I could be doing to help/encourage him to use a pen/pencil.

Ditch the tracing paper, go buy some funky pens with him - a pack of Berol or something. Get him to write just the first letter of his name - draw a picture round it, using the same letter, so he writes it lots, but is being imaginative with it. Once he's got confident with the first letter, then do the whole name.
Or get him to choose a word he'd like to write - we did this with DS and he chose 'Bottom' - he had a load of fun writing it in huge letters and taking it in to show his teacher, who fortunately thought it was great and pinned it on the wall for all to see. Basically just make it fun.

Maybe his christmas list? Postcards to relatives (even if only to say hello, looking forward to seeing you soon etc)

Writing with his finger in a tray of sand or coloured rice, writing on a blackboard with chalk, writing with a white-board marker on a white board, writing with glue to put glitter on, chalking his name onto the pavement,

You might want to look at my very similar thread from this morning: mumsnet.com/Talk/primary/863381-Where-can-I-get-writing-practise-for-a-reception-child
