What is 7+ exams?

Can anyone kindly explain what 7+ exams is and who should take the exam? We've been in the UK the past 3 years and I still haven't gotten the hang of the education system here.

Selective entrance exam for a Prep school or independent primary school(ie private) to enter in year3. If you use the state school system it is of no relevance but you may coem across SATs instead which monitor progress at 7(optional), 11 and 14.
