What is cursive writing?

Is it a new way of describing 'joined up writing'

Just read something in DS1's homework diary and am now confused.

He's in year 3, do they still teach joined up wrting? Is it new?

Thanks

Yes it's joined up handwriting.

shinyshoes · 14/11/2009 17:15

Yes it's the same as joint up writing just renamed

Nooooooooooo lol its not new. It's the word we used when I was little many moons ago.

I'm not going mad, here it is

Well - actually it isn't the same as joined up handwriting exactly. Cursive is when all letters are joined together. Joined up handwriting is when many of the letters are joined, but not all.
Cursive letters are also often formed differently - the lower case 's' for instance, or an upper case 'z', and others.
In joined up writing, the letters still look like they do when they are printed (ie not joined up).

Sorry jennifersofia you are talking about different styles of cursive/joined up rather than about separate systems.

Many people do not know that 'Cursive' just means 'Joined-up'. It is not the name of any particular style.

Cursive starts off unjoined when learning. DS has learnt form YR to put sweep ups and sweep downs on every letter. Now in Y1 he has started (on just mind) to automatically join the letters together.

So it is the letters that are cursive not whether they are joined up or not.

Yes joined-up. My dd is doing it in reception. "Will they be using quills?" asked dh.

Technically the unjoined version is called pre cursive.
