Book suggestions for a 7 year old free reader (boy)

My DS has just finished oxford reading tree stage 6/7 and has now started reading proper books. The books he's getting at school aren't very exciting and he's losing interest.

Any ideas what I could get for him - ideally with some pictures still in and not too difficult words.

He has a great imagination and I remember reading Enid Blyton Faraway tree/Famous Five etc but I'm not sure if they may be a bit old for him yet.

Don't know if I'm keen on trying Horrid Henry - don't want to pick up bad habits! He wouldn't like anything scary.

Any suggestions?

Ingles - school said he was now a free reader. I've just bought some level 9/10 ort books - he doesn't like the books the school are now giving him - proper books with lots of words and without pictures. I don't want him put off, so I've bought some I know he'll like for home. I'm hoping they're not too easy for him though, I don't want to hold him back but I don't want him to be put off reading either.

keep going with ORT then. I think level 10 they have some good magic key ones, Egyptian adventure etc, he'll probably like those.
I'm amazed the school think he's ready to go onto full chapter books. That is one hell of a leap and it will put him off as he will have to sound out so many words. We are told the right level is when they have to sound out 1 word in 20.

Here are some reading guides to help you gauge the correct level of books.
ORT Guide
kaleidoscope
HTH's

Captain Underpants
Joke books
Roald Dahl
and what about comics. My eldest was a reluctant reader until he discovered the Beano

Try visting your local library - show them the kind of thing your dc is reading and they will find books that are similar. There's lots available at around ORT stage 6/7.

seeker, Hiccup's a hit here too - though DS is nowhere near reading them to himself, but then again he is only 5. I kind of like the fact we'll read them now, then when he's bigger he can read them again to himself.
