My little boy has just started school last term and is doing really well and has just started learning how to write his name and learning some other letters too. He is also bringing home books without words to share. I assumed most kids his age dont know how to write or read the alphabet until school but a friend of mines little girl is bringing home story books which she can read and she is writing complete sentences with a little help with spelling. I understand all kids are on a different level at this age but who is closer to average in you opinion?

I think both are completely fine. The range is huge at this age. As long as you can see progression then I would try not to worry about it.

Seems to be plenty of both in my DD's reception class too

Both within normal ranges. Your ds sounds like he is doing fine and not below average ime.
