Reading level 3 - can anyone tell me what this means?

I know these threads are thinly disguised boasting but I've Googled and can't find a straightforward explanation. DD (Y2) has been assessed as having a Level 3 reading level - does this basically mean Y3 standard?

I know she's not a genius or anything but would like to know HOW good this is so I can pathetically bask in second-hand glory (and distract myself from the incredible awfulness of her handwriting)

If this is the assessment that is normally done at the end of KS1 (ie infants) then level 3 is pretty good.

The expected attainment (I think that's the term) for the end of yr 2 is level 2b. The levels go 2a, 2b, 2c and then level 3 (which is also split into a, b, c but not usually given at this stage).

OTOH it might just mean she is at level 3 in her school reading scheme!? in which case I don't know what it means without knowin gmore of the scheme.

You need to ask the school really.

If she is a good reader it is unlikely to be linked to a specific book level, as level 3 would be more aimed towards Y1, and some reception children.

It is most likely NC levels perhaps? Level 3 is working above avergae for her year group.

what kind of things is she reading? If she's reading longer chapter books (things like Dick King-Smith's Babe, Charlotte's Web etc) then the teacher would definitely mean NC level 3 rather than reading scheme level 3

It's not necessarily Y3 standard as I read with kids in Y4 and they're not up to that standard yet (they are struggling though)

don't worry about the writing yet, ds2's was unbelievably awful until half way through Y3 and it's gradually become more legible, so that now (in y5) it's almost presentable when he tries ...

Agree with what Clary said, but just to clarify: the sublevels go 2c, 2b, 2a, then level 3c, 3b, 3a onto 4, not the other way around.

gah of course it is level 2c is the lower level, I always get that round my neck (I'm suppoed to know this stuff)
