Does anyone know if coaches that take school children on trips have to have seat belts?

Yes they do, probably just a lap belt unless it is a minibus.

DS (5) says yes they always do and they check it is done up and if you can't do it up they will do it for you.

Hope this puts your mind at rest. The coach is the most exciting part, you know!

I went out with DD's class for the first time yesterday on one of the world's most ancient double decker buses, but it did have lap belts for everybody.

Strangest thing was, we had a pair of parents who REFUSED to let their child wear a seatbelt. We refused to take her in the coach (as it would be our responsibility and would not be following our risk assessment) and her parents had to drop her off on school trips. Funnily enough, when we went on a residential 100 miles away, she was allowed to wear the seatbelt!!
