Can schools give your children their antibiotics?

Just wondered if yours did.

Mine do if it's longer than a 3 day course (as with a 3 day course they suggest you give it after school and before bed)

But as doseage needs to be spread out more with a six day course they are happy to do it.

Although DS has said the lady who does it is very scary, I know who she is, she's the business manager and I see his point!

Yes they do at DD's school, no problem.

It depends, if it has to be taken 3 times a day, we would suggest before school, after school and bedtime but if this isn't possible/feasible/recommended we would administer prescription medicines only ( and only if we are given written details of dosage etc!) We have had 5 year olds wandering in clutching bottles of antibiotics and saying "mummy says I have to give you this" You can imagine the reaction

At our school HT or DHT will administer prescription meds if required.

But most ABs are best administered at equal intervals, and are more effective this way. So generally the following works well: 8am, 4pm, midnight (rouse them briefly to take meds).

Ours will but they have medical staff on site.

On the same subject, sort of, will your school help to give a child their inhaler, or do they have to do it themselves? They are wonderful with DD2 (although she does it herself now), and have been wonderful since DS was diagnosed, but my friend's school are really funny about it.

Ours doesn't do antiobiotics, but then you can usually fit a 3 times/day tablet course around the school day. Inhalers the children administer themselves under supervision.

No. You have to go and administer it yourself.

Not sure what the policy is at DS's school. Probably should find out really.

Not at my school.
Asthma inhalers, I'll remind mine and watch them administer them themselves.
If I realise that they are 'doing it wrong' I'll have a word with the collecting carer at the end of the day and ask them to retrain the child using the instructions provided with the inhaler.

Oh, just remembered. We do accept written permission for an adult friend/relation to come and administer antibiotics.

We are expected to keep ours off school until they have finished the course as they will not administer it. OF course, you follow these guidelines and are then rewarded with a letter at the end of the school year complaining about your child's attendance!

Yes, our two schools both do this, but I don't think it's common in state schools.

Ours will do it only if the prescription (for ABs or anything else) is four times a day - if it's three times a day they expect you to do it at home (breakfast, tea time, bedtime).

Our school has a school nurse (shared with the high school next door, so yes. Last year ds had to have antiobiotics 4 times a day for a week. However I still ended up going in every single day as he refused to take them (they tasted foul) and the nurse understandably was not prepared to hide them in vimto as I did.

They will give any medication as long as you fill in the little form with dosage instructions and sign it.
