Year 2 maths -- tally charts? pictograms? block charts?

DD's homework says "In class looking at collecting data and putting into tally charts, pictograms and block graphs."

What are tally charts? pictograms? block graphs? I can guess what these things are but don't really have an undersdtanding of what they are going to do with them in year 2 curriculum. Any eachers out there who could enlighten me?

Tally charts:

You use little lines to count the objects being surveyed.

eg,

Favourite colour of class

Red: IIIII IIIII III - 13
Blue: IIIII II = 7
Yellow: III = 3

etc

Normally the 5th line in each block is drawn as a diagonal through the previous 4, but can't do that on computer.

Pictogram

Make a bar chart using pictures to represent the items being surveyed. Need a key sometimes to show how many items one pcture in the cahrt represents (eg 1 boat = 1 person showing boat as feve transport or 1 boat = 2 people, etc)

Normally drawn vertically, with axis labelled, but can't do here

Bllock graph - as picturegram but using squares of colours. Normally drawn on graph or squared paper, and with labelled axis to show the options being surveyed at bottom, and number of "votes" on vertical axis. Blocks of colours drawn directly on top of one another, often a diffeent colour for each survey option. Makes tall blacks of colour showing how many people chose each.

bbc bitesize has some data handling games

Year 2's spend a lot of time collecting data on a variety of subjects, favourite pets, crisp flavours, car colours, you name it they will collect data on it! We often have groups of yr2's wandering round school clipboards in hand from class to class gathering information which they then turn into weird and wonderful graphs. By the end of the year however, they also need to be able to analyse given graphs and answer questions on them-how many more people like x than y, how many children are in x class, how many children like x and y. Handling data is great fun!

Thanks for the link. She is sick and probably won't go to school tomorrow but might like that data collection game. I'll point her to it if she feels up to it.
