Sorry, another reading scheme thread - Ginn 360

Ds is on level 2 and in year 1. How does that compare with levels on ORT? What would an average year 1 pupil be on in Ginn?

The stories are repetitive and boring and make Biff, Chip and Kipper books look like Booker prize winners.

DD has just started these in reception and is already very bored and reusing to read them She loves books and reading but has no interest in these books at all - Now concerned we might be stuck with them for years.

Ds was reading well before the summer hols but I think mainly because I got the ORT Songbirds books (from a MN recommendation). He read the blue level easily having had a term and a half of being bored and refusing to read the books the school provided. I was told to trust his teacher but in the end gave up and did my own thing. I can see the same happening this year.

These Ginn books don't seem to have anything interesting about them and imo seem to be a collection of words on a page with no obvious story that I can discern.

I have started reading the ort books at home with Dd and she seems to enjoy them so much more.
We have a plan each evening she reads the ginn then I read a fun story then she gets to look at the ort book.
Bribery is necessary and she has only been in school a month. because she wanted to go to school so she could read all her stories herself.

DD in year 1 is half way through level 3 of Ginn 360, I find the books about Ben, Annie, digger etc OK but some some of the smaller books are a bit odd. In reception DD also read ginn upstarts level 1 and 2 and they were a bit more challenging for her. I agree the books are quite repetitive but I like that and anyway her reception teacher missed some of them out.

We also go to the library and DD loves ORT, but she wont read them even though she is more than able.

DS's school uses these - they were great at getting him started with reading but they do move at a snail's pace. He has just started year 1 and is half way through level 3 but only because the teacher moved him up, otherwise we'd still be plodding through yet another book with the same three words in!!

What I did in the end was go the library where they had tons of brilliant reading scheme books and they have expanded his vocabulary much more quickly. We do one of them each morning and his 'easy' school book last thing at night.

Spoke to both the TA and teacher today but didn't make any progress. Ds has to read this stuff before they will consider moving on to other schemes, even though he finds these books so dull. Told ds this tonight and I have never seen him read so fast or so fluently! I told him the quicker we get through this crap rubbish the better .

These books are v dull and seem pointless at the beginning but I just wanted to let you know they do get better! My DD also in year 1 has just started on level 4. She plodded through levels 1 and 2 in reception then speeded through level 3 as the teacher kindly started to miss some out at this stage as she was clearly finding them too easy and very boring. Level 4 have proper stories and much trickier words though and seem much more useful imo - so hang in there!

I found out today that dull reading schemes may be the least of my worries. The words 'Aston Index' and 'Educational psychologist' were mentioned . I will start (yet) another thread.
