i was at my son's school yesterday and starting talking to another little boy. i asked him his name and he said "Ben". A little girl I childmind said that his brother was in her class.

So I asked Ben what his surname was.

"Er..... Ben.... Jamin. Yes. Ben Jamin. That's my surname. Jamin. Ben Jamin"

Reminds me of when my DD was 5 and telling her Granny about her new friends at school. She told her about Vicky and Granny said, "that'll be short for Victoria". DD thought for a bit and then said, "there's also Amber, I think that's short for traffic light"

You'd be surprised at how many kids don't know what a surname is. I find if you say "what's your last name?" they understand a bit better.
