Do they go by which group a child was in the previous year, recommendations from the previous teacher, etc?

Bumping as I am interested too. We have moved from abroad and DS has been placed in certain groups but I don't know how it has been decided, very curious.

I was a primary teacher and I used to sit with the old teacher and take her guidance for groups. I made changes throughout the year but the first groupings came from her.

in the school my DC attend, it seems the new teacher uses the old groups from previous year. then once the class is settled, makes changes as necessary.

DD has just gone into year 1. They immediately went in the same groups that they left reception in. Since then they groups have been moved around slightly, and I assume will continue to throughout the year as the new teacher reassess and learns more about each of them.
