nits/lice in DD's class (and the other yr 2 class) - preventative treatment?

This has happened a couple of times before and we haven't caught it yet. (thankfully!)

Just wondered if there is any preventative treatment out here to keep her (and the rest of us!) from catching it?

Tightly braided hair is my best tip. Some people swear by tea tree products, but I am not convinced.

Spray hair every morning with water adn a few drops of tea tree oil.

Seems to be working ok for us so far this term

DD caught them a couple of times last year (yuk!). Since then I've insisted she has her hair tied back and also use Lyclear repellent every day. Seems to be working so far - fingers crossed.

What is Lyclear?

That's the one - I got in in Boots locally a bit cheaper than that I think but it's lasted ages. DD has quite long hair but as long as it's tied back it only needs a few squirts each morning.

Someone on here once recommended washing with Alberto Balsam Tea Tree Tingle shampoo so we have been doing that and not had them. I must also admit though that I don't think they have been going around DS's school in that time as we normally get a letter home and they get checked after every holiday.

shouldnt really use preventatives as the nits build up an immunity to repellants. You should only treat if you see them visibly. No harm in buying a nit comb and checking the hair weekly

I read a study online (can't find it at the moment, will look later) that found pure coconut oil both kills and repels lice.

My boys caught them once over a year ago and since then we have used Inecto shampoo and spray in conditioner and they have never had them back, despite having letters from the school saying they had had reports of nits in both my boys' years. (Added advantage of using it is that the boys smell good enough to eat. ) We also nittygritty comb their hair every bath time to be sure they are clear.

A plus point is that it works out a lot cheaper than using essential oils or lyclear repellent.

Vodka! Seriously. There's a very long thread somewhere else about this..

Teatree products - they hate it . Used them with both dds and only had one bout in 12 years. Avon used to do a really cheap one but haven't seen it for a few years.

If they actually get them, dilute vinegar with water, pour over the hair and watch the little buggers leap for their lives - doesn't smell nice but really works.

Tea tree shampoo. Mine haven't had nits since they started using it. The Escenti one (in Sainbury) has a good strong scent.

Tell me more about vodka. On the head or in the mouth?

What kind of vinegar? Does it matter?

Vodka - on the head. Washed out several times the next morning. We did this on holiday when we had nothing with us and were three thousand miles away from our bathroom where the hedrin was It worked.
