Iron on name tapes...if yours stayed on how did you do it?

We bought some Iron on name tapes (Cash's) for DD#1 who has just started school. In the first wash 3 out of 5 labels came off - no tumble drier used this time either though may well at times tumble dry.
So, those of you who have used them sucessfully without them falling out please tell me how you put them in. We started ironing the label directly as per the instructions supplied but this just made the label come straight off so we used a cloth over the top and they seemed ok to apply after that. Shame they wouldn't say on! I have written in labels with a laundry pen too, but really want labels of some sort in there and prefer not to resort to sewing unless I absolutely have to.

with ours you had to heat and cool them 3 times (able labels).

Pleeeease... just buy a permanent marker and write the names in - don't stress about it!

I use the fab and funky ones from easy2name and they have stayed on. I had to replace a couple as they faded a bit but most of them were fine. I followed the instructions given i.e. hot iron on the clothing for 10 seconds, remove name tape from backing and place on hot bit of clothing, cover with the ironing paper and then press with hot iron on top for 25 seconds and then leave to cool before removing the paper.

Mine were from Clipper Woven Labels (though not woven!). They don't have a clothy feel to them, they are more like plastic so when you iron them on they become similar to a transfer on a T-shirt. I only had to put iron straight on top for 20 secs (cotton, no steam) and those babies are stuck for life!! Highly recommended

if you get them hot enough & apply the correct amount of pressure they actually seem to bind to the fabric - you can see the fabric weave on the label!

At first I didn't have the iron hot enough & give it enough time & pressure, now I have the hang of it they're not going anywhere.

Errr... why all this angst? Permanent markers cost about £1.50 and last for about 3 years. They don't wash off. They're simple to use. They do the job (i.e. let people know whose item of clothing it is). Everyone's happy - children don't lose clothes, mum doesn't have the job of having to iron on labels that don't stick (or WORSE - sew them in) and teacher can identify lost things. Sorted.

easy2name woven labels are fab - have been on some of dd's clothes for over 2 years now and no sign of budging. Just ironed for about 30 seconds - hotest setting and no steam. I think sadly when it comes to iron on labels... not all iron on labels are equal. I wouldn't use anyone but easy2name anymore as they really are fab. (and you can even buy the nice italic handwriting woven ones so it looks like you've spent hours sewing them in yourself.. )

Common? How can you the identity of an article of clothing be 'common'? It's just serving the purpose of identification - it's not an indication of social status.
(I hope you weren't being serious there!)

I used 'easy2name' too. I found them fantastic ! The ones I ironed on at the beginning of reception stayed on the whole school year, with tumble drying. Just ironed for 10-15 seconds, medium setting and repeated 3 times.

I won Easy2name ones from MN just before DD started school three years ago. I just followed their instructions and they stayed put. I have just sorted out some old clothes of hers and her cardis, etc from then still have her names firmly attached inside.

Thanks everyone - I will try and iron them on a bit hotter and see what happens - if not I'll buy from one of the suggested manufacturers instead.

I have a laundry marker as I said in my original post - there are various reasons I want labels as well, much to do with DD dyspraxia and locating them strategically to help her put clothes on the right way round in the first place. I have written in several items as a back up just in case though with the laundry marker too.
