lower reading level in yr1 than reception, confused.

ds started yr1 on monday, he finished reception on purple, now on orange which from a previous thread is 2 bands below. is it usual to start off at a lower level, or did the reception teacher push him a bit too far ahead? i wouldnt want to speak to the teacher just yet, i'll just give her time and see what she's doing.

Its normal I think. To start with children usually start the autumn term having lost some ground or which in Yr R/1/2 can take up to the Autumn half term to get back.

Secondly the teacher probably wants to get a feel for how your DS is doing and has started him on slightly easier books to see if he can cope with them, knowing that it won't dent his confidence if he has lost some of skills over the holidays.

That said I would have expected him to move up the 2 levels very quickly and I would go and I would be putting a note in his reading log (if he has one) in the first instance, and if that doesn't work, I would go and see the teacher.

Give it a couple of weeks.

Is the orange level book one your son has read before? Is it from the same scheme? because there can be differences from one publisher to another. Remember orange band at the beginning of Y1 is a good level so your son is doing very well.

I was in exactly the same position. The teacher said that they normally start them on easier books and move them through. She picked up v quickly when he read with her that was too easy so moved him on. He still isnt quite in the same place as end of Reception but he is happy with what he is reading which is most important thing.

Good luck and mention it if you are worried as teacher was fine with me when i mentioned that he found it a bit easy.

It might be to help confidence too. So they move up a year, but are happy to think "I can do this'.

thanks for the reply. They're new books anyway and much more interesting than the ususal chip and biff ones! They have many more words as well and even though he's reading them easily, it's teaching him to read for longer. I'll ust let his teacher keep doing what she's doing and have a word with her at the parent's evening before the october half term. the important thing is that he's really enoying the new reading scheme.
