Help - advice please with which clothing labels to use for first time?!

Hi all,
can those of you with slightly older children please help before I shoot myself..... my daughter starts school in Sep but I have no idea which clothing labels to buy, there seem to be so many choices. Have narrowed it to 2 websites, stuckonyou and simplystuck, but can't decide what I really need (all seems v expensive!).

What's the difference between the iron-on labels and the transfers? And are the clothing dots any good or do you really need the line ones so you can put them on necks of poloshirts etc? How big is too big for that??!!

then what sort of thing are the other normal stickers used for? Do I need shoe dots as opposed to shoe straight line labels, or does it not really matter?

I can't sew, and after using iron on labels that don't stay on, I now use clip in tags from nametag-it.co.uk and they are brilliant. It takes all of 5 seconds to name something and they are really secure.

For shoes I use whoshoo labels, but I can't remember where I got them from.

Thanks PHH....great timing - have only been frantically searching MN this morning for such a solution - can't sew (won't sew... ) and can never get iron hot enough for iron-on ones without melting clothes

My son is label phobic so just in case you don't get on with the clip in tags (which are a fab idea) I use www.easy2name.co.uk

They have iron in labels that are like stickers rather than a fabric strip and they do stay in place.

Transfers are only good for anything with no texture so a cotton t shirt for example. Anything like a knitted jumper or polo shirt, it isn't as good.

I use shoe dots and they come with a clear cover.

I have also used iron on transfers for the black socks that ds1 wears.

I have had stuff from stuckonyou but tend to use them for the bag tags which are great, especially when everyone has the same bookbag.

Easy2name are wonderful - not the cheapest out there but well worth it. They do lovely iron-on woven labels that look beautiful, just like the ones our mums used to spend hours sewing in with tiny stitches! Some things have been washed for years and they never come unstuck.

Permanent marker works every time. I don't know why people beat themselves up over this one. All teachers will look for is identification on the clothing, not how neat the stitching is, or how perfectly ironed the label is!

If the name is there, the teacher will be very, very happy!

IME iron on labels are poor on sweatshirts , especially new ones with their fluffy 'wrong side'.I use cash's name tapes and sew them in while I'm watching telly.

Trouble with permanant markers comes if you want to pass the garment on to a younger child who won't take kindly to her elder brotheres name being written in it.

Just write the surname then!!!!

purplehighheels how easy are those clips to remove? for hand-me-down purposes.

Never tried removing them, but if you can't remove the button I suppose you could still cut off the label.

I don't see that the family member a lost article of clothing reaches is important, as long as it gets tot he correct home!

It is tragic how many clothes are lost by children, and anything to make marking easier must be a plus point. Last term we ended up with 50+ sweatshirts, 30 pairs of trainers, 3 coats, several pairs of football boots... + PE gear - all unmarked. The mother of one child in my class 'joked' that she had bought 12 sweatshirts this year! Therefore, rather than expecting parents (usually the female variety) to sit down and sew in labels, it would save a lot of time and money for some just to buy a permanent marker and to write a name in.

Sorry to rant on, but it really gets my goat, when we (i.e. the teachers and school staff) are supposed to be teaching these children to be responsible and to look after their things, and then the parents treat things as expendable and immediately replace them.

DD often wears DS hand me downs jumpers still with his name in.
