Will you be makeing your DCs keep up their school work in the holidays?

If so, what work will you set and how will you get them to do it?

DS1 is finishing year 3, very capable, but prone to poor concentration and laziness TBH

He reads well and enjoys that so will keep that up without any pressure from me and we will do the library summer reading challenge.

I am concerned that he was more or less top of the class at the end of infants but now seems to be decidedly average - which is fine if that's where he should be, but I think he is brighter than his written work shows, because he rushes it and is unfocused. I wondered if some sort of summer project might help him be well prepared for his new teacher in Sept, but don't want to make the summer one long fight. What are you planning?

Not school work. I will encourage reading, drawing, painting and craft but most of all I will encourage them to relax and have fun with their friends.

ds is just finishing reception so we'll do the library reading challenge and get loads of books out for him to practise reading but I will be trying to make it fun

I will also encourage him to practise his writing but not make it

and I will not get him and me stressed ha ha, think I need to pin that one up on the fridge

I'm planning to learn how to tie-dye T- shirts and go to the beach a lot. And that's it. We'll read for pleasure, but the clue's in the name - it's meant to be a holiday. I think children are quite stressed and targetted enough as it is.

oh and I'm wondering if we'll have to keep a hideous diary of what we've done all summer, is that the norm for the summer after recpetion?

Nowt, we are planning to have lots of adventures and new experiences.

Yep, there will be book reading but happy for them to read what ever they want.

Blimey no not likely!

Well a bit of reading maybe, but I think reading shouldn't really be seen as 'work' and dc tend to have a book on the go most of the time anyway.

But no way would I start setting a projects. It's holiday time!

my boys just finished year 1 and get 8 weeks of holiday. They are obsessed with playstation and would play it all day if I let them (which I don't). During term time I would get them to do a page of homework or their spellings before they could play on it after school. They were quite happy to do this and it meant their homework and spellings were done quite painlessly. I plan to give them 1 week off doing this plus the 2 weeks when we are actually away and then I am going to get them to do some kind of "work" before each playstation session. Could be spellings or writing or maths stuff.......am I really mean???

Also lots of cycling, swimming, eating ice cream, colouring, and messing about in the garden of course!!!!

oh good! we have had to do a weekend diary all through reception and tbh it has been very trying thinking of things ds can draw in there!! specially when some w/ends all we do is go to B&Q and tesco, lol

I want to practise ds' reading as I'm worried he'll forget all he's learnt in reception and he's only just starting to get the hang of it
but I know it needs to be fun which is why quest seekers at the library is so fab

No. Reading is the only thing I will try and sneak in but not going to make a big deal about it.

DS goes in to year 1 in sept so will be keeping up some reading and pen control/writing skills. Only because he will get bored with no focus as such and also he easily forgets what he has been doing.

Will be playing various Maths games with them - 10 mins a day.
Reading they love anyway, so don't intend to do anything more than have books available for them to read when they need them.

Not in the sitting down schoolwork and writing sense.
However, should you feel the need, one of the spelling rules specific to Y3 is to learn to drop the e when adding -ing to a verb.
As in baking, coming, dancing....making.
You could practice together.

No! We don't do "school work" in the holidays, and never have. They are always encouraged to read books for pleasure. We talk a lot and discuss topical issues, which may be viewed as 'educational' and they also have open access to art and other creative materials to draw and write as much as they want. But we don't make them.
We often visit museums and do other 'educational' things; but not school work.

No school work chez Sag, will probably do the library thing as they like that, and they like craft stuff so I'll shove them in the direction of the free stuff at the shopping centre so I don't have to bother with the mess.

We will read and do some times tables practice. DS has worked really hard on learning them all this year (Y3) and he would be really upset he if forgot them all over the holiday so a bit of practice won't hurt.

Yes my DD is behind with her numeracy and I intend to work with that during the holidays. I asked advice from a teacher at her school and she said the best thing to do is to go over the work they have been doing throughout the previous year. (we get their books home at the end of the school year - so I will be going through them). She said that the first few weeks of term is going over stuff from the previous school year and if they are up to speed with that then they will have a head start into the next school years' work.

DS has been told to work on his handwriting and to expand his mathematical concept application(!??!)

They have asked them to complete a summer diary, and also we'll do the library reading challenge.

Have had to ask the teacher what she is actually on about with the maths one. I don't really want to do workbooks with him, but if she suggested fun ways (games maybe?) then I'd prioritise those.

He has a list as long as my arm of places he wants to go - national gallery, zoo, urban farm, etc. So I think the time will fly.
