P8 s all over the place. Please help and explain.

Hello,

My DS is in year 1. Got his report today. I know he is struggling and this is to be expected given his circumstances. His report is fine in that he is obviously no trouble and well liked.
Academically he is not doing so good, bless him.
I am afraid I do not understand the gradings and no explaination has been offered apart from 'The national expectation of attainment for a pupil in year 1 is 1a/2c'

DS has 1c for science but P8 for Maths and English (the only other grades given).

Could someone please explain? I know I can ask on Monday but I would like to have an idea asap please.

not sure, could it be the pre-school scale which is used before the national curriculum levels start? Does that sound possible?

That would make sense I suppose - P = preschool?

Its a bit sad though because DS is 6 .

P8 relates to the P scales (PIVATS) which precede 1c, 1b, etc , and measure achievement in small steps.
P8 is the last P scale before NC levels 1c, 1b, etc.

His teacher needs to explain the next steps your ds should be working on, and how they plan to support him with this.

yr1 average is 1b
average by end of yr 2 is 2b

P8 is a working towards goal, he is nearly at 1c, perfectly within normal limits trust me

they are only supposed to test reading, writing and maths
science in yr1 and a grade???? give me strength

I hope you don't mind me asking does your ds have SEN?

DD is preschool in a special school and does something called p levels,will hunt down her statement as mentions it there....

Piffle, they aren't tests, they are teacher assessments, drawn from lots of different sources of evidence.

The P scales are used for children who are working towards Level 1 in National Curriculum subjects, so from Y1 onwards (they are not used for Foundation Stage children).

P8 is the highest, and he should soon move onto Level 1c. Have a look here.

I'm surpised the school haven't explained the details to you - seems a bit off. I would imagine he should be getting a little extra support in school, maybe with an Individual Education Plan? It's really not unusual for Y1. I'd have a quick word with his teacher if I were you, just so that it's all clearer. HTH

Gladbag I am really confused,so are PIVATS and P scales different things?It mentions both in dd Statement (Sorry for thread hijack Chegirl)

Poor teacher assessment then!

A decent teacher doesn't need a wodge of tests to prove a Y1 child can read most numbers up to 10 in familiar contexts, make
attempts to record numbers up to 10, use the vocabulary involved in adding and subtracting , etc, and is therefore a 1a.

feenie here is the rub
DD knows times tables up to 14
can add subtract to 100 - very numerate
x=4 16=x=y, what is y? Yep....
But has poor fine motor skills so test situations fail her...
But hey...

Thank you.Was confused by post saying they are not used for foundation stage children as dd statemented and foundation stage and the Ed Psych mentioned them in the report as did school.There are so many sn acronyms it makes my head spin.

wrinklytum Yes DS has SEN. We are just starting the statementing process.

I wasnt impressed with the lack of explaination on the report. It doesnt suprise me as I have had issues with the schools poor communication.

I will look at the links kindly given, thank you.

Won't be a huge problem till Y6, when the test is the be all and end all.

Even in Y2, the test is a tiny part of the teacher assessment.

Hopefully they'll have scrapped 'em by then, so sense will prevail and the teacher assessment will stand.

My understanding of it (and I may well be wrong) is that PIVATS is based on the 'P scales', but breaks them down into smaller steps that are useful for target-setting and showing specific progress. The PIVATS breakdown of little learning steps may well be used in an SEN pre-school to help teachers assess progress, although generally children in the Foundation Stage are assessed against EYFS. Does that make sense?

I am getting more of a picture thanks to links and explainations on here.

wrinkly yes he is rather fab . Mind you the school tends to see the best of his behaviour. He seems to 'relax' more at home
