End of Year 3 expectations

We have just got reports with SATs results on for my Yr 3 DS - what do they mean as I thought they didn't do SATs this year - also what is he expected to get at this stage as they seem to be different from the ones last year ? Anyone know? TIA

reading 4c
maths 3a
but it said his hanbdwriting is 2

Apparently there's this thing called "optional SATS", they do them in every year but they're not really "optional" 'cos it would be very difficult for the school to garner the necessary statisitics if they didn't do them.

They look very respectable. How do they compare with his year 2 'proper' SATs?

At the end of year 2, level 2 is where the government expects children to be, with 3 being the highest level. By the end of year 6, the government expects them to be level 4, with the highest level available being level 5, so I guess in most cases children spend the years between 2 & 6 gradually working up from levels 2 or 3 to 4 or 5.

I can't actually remember I know he did well on his reading as he has always been good at that but i can't remember about the rest - they were 2s and 3s I think but its the letters which are confusing.

my dd reprt today said yr3 expected to get2a/3c so your son is above average

These are above average results - 3c is the lowest within the level 3 band and 3a is the highest. Don't worry about the handwriting - I've never met a doctor with neat writing! (and they are supposed to be pretty clever!)They can obviously read your child's work to be able to give him a writing score!
Also ... it's perfectly normal for children to have a higher reading score than anything else particulary writing - given that generally you learn to read before you are able to do any of the other subjects ...... obviously, there are always exceptions!

My dd didn't get any SATS ratings. The results went 1 = working towards; 2 = progress made and 3 = target achieved.

I'm a bit concerned as dd has gone from Y2, where she had all 3's to a blend of both 2's and 3's with her maths being particularly poor.

I am concerned because I flagged maths as an issue at both parents evenings this year and was told it wasn't a problem. So why only 2's now?

Am I being a bit of a fusspot over this or should I raise it with the teacher???

Are you sure they are optional SATs, and not teacher assessments?

If they are just optional SATs, take no notice - what a Y3 child does in the first timed test of his/her life is of little or no consequence to the rest of the school year.

Pyrocanthus - there are no Y2 'proper' SATs; that too is a teacher assessment, a measured judgement that comes from a gradually built up picture of a child's attainment in Y2. Lots of different evidence is used to formulate this judgement, a small part of which is the test.

Much better way of judging a child's attainment that the half hour snapshot of a test.
