What happens if school has no head and no deputy?

The head of DS1's school is retiring at the end of this term. No replacement has been found, and the school currently has no deputy (just senior members of staff). I've heard a rumour that as things stand the schoool won't be able to open is September if a replacement head isn't found.

What happens is situations like this? Are there such things as Suply Head Teachers?

Yes there are peripatetic Heads who stand in sometimes another local head will be asked to be a "caretaker" until a new head is appointed.

A friend's DH does it- it usually lasts about a term. I have known an occasion when the Head of a successful school went for a term and her deputy ran her school,in her absence.

They have been looking for a new head for nearly a year - the problem is it's a Catholic school, so the head must be Catholic.

You can have a stand in who is not catholic. Something similar happened at a school I taught at, someone came in from another school but they were unable to apply for the permanent position at a later date because they were not catholic.

Head of a Key Stage will probably be appointed acting deputy. Then LEA will find a local head to either pop in for a few days a week to support or stay in the school fulltime.

It depends on the experience of the existing teachers. One of them may be asked to "act up" for a term or more, or the LEA may move someone across from another school, while that school's deputy acts-up.

Our Head has buggered off to New Zealand for a year on a paid sabbatical. The deputy is doing her best but we all know that the Head probably isn't coming back and we'll have to find a new Head which could take months and months.
