How many days do your children get to learn their spellings?

My dd is getting them on a Tuesday and being tested on a Thursday. Doesnt seem long enough for us, partly because she has an after school activity so is too tired on one evening.

It seems to me they are only wanting a short term memory rather than a long term memory kind of thing.

Or, is it a good thing as they cant dwell on them all week?

7y DD (Y2) gets spellings sent home on a Monday to learn by Thursday. We do hem verbally in the car.

dd has a week but often only does them the evening before .

Are you sure she's remembering to bring them home? DD was terrible for that; homework was brought home on Tues to be in on Thurs, but it was given out the Friday before!

2 days isn't long enough, that's poor planning

dd gets them on a friday for wednesday. she looks at them when having b'fast on the wed! Year 2

From a teacher's point of view it really doesn't matter how long you give children to learn spellings because immediately after the test they won't be able to spell them! (even if they got them all right for the test)

We are not quite at the stage of doing them verbally, but its a method we will probably do when dd is more used to them.

DD is in Reception and has only started doing them this term so its all a bit new to us. She gets a list of ten stuck into her homework book on Tuesday and the date of the test. I think ideally i would prefer her to have them over a weekend so we could stick any words on the fridge etc for a bit of subconscious learning but there is no time for that.

So you dont think its to prevent stress or to prevent them getting to intense and obsessed with practicing?
