Am I missing something as dd gave up and I don't seem to be able to do it.
There are four calculations in this diagram, three across and on down.

Use the numbers 1 to 9. Put a different number in each box. Each calculaton must be correct.

[ ]-[ ]=[ ]
.........X
[ ]&divid;[ ]=[ ]

[ ]+[ ]=[ ]

say what ?

SoupDragon · 15/06/2009 18:09

You have 3 equations

A - B = C
D/E = F
G + H = I

A to I are the numbers 1 to 9. You need to work out which numbers go where.

lexcat · 15/06/2009 18:11

Sorry that looks strange but all the are meant to be in line with each other. Couldn't get the divide and had to use the dots to line up X in the last column.
Any help would be greatful.

SoupDragon · 15/06/2009 18:12

Oh, I've no idea what the dots and the X are.

SoupDragon · 15/06/2009 18:13

I guess that C x F = I then.

catinthehat2 · 15/06/2009 18:14

Lex - Assuming Soupy's simplified presentation is correct, can you show us what the 4th calcualtion, ie the one going downwards, looks like?

ingles2 · 15/06/2009 18:15

it's a puzzle... just start by writing down A=1 B=2 C=3 and then try fitting them in the sums

SoupDragon · 15/06/2009 18:16

9 can only be A or I.

SoupDragon · 15/06/2009 18:16

Actually, if there's that multiplication one, 9 has to be A.

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 15/06/2009 18:16

8-7=1
6 divided 3 =2

4+5=9

goblincandoa5k · 15/06/2009 18:16

Try this,

6/3=2
9-4=5
7+1=8

SoupDragon · 15/06/2009 18:19

Neither of those work if C x F = I

annoyedmum · 15/06/2009 18:19

doesn't make sense to me sorry!

goblincandoa5k · 15/06/2009 18:19

Sorry, forgot about the 4th calculation

lexcat · 15/06/2009 18:20

The X is times and the dots I put there to try and get it in the right place in the last column.

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 15/06/2009 18:21

C or F has to be 2.

goblincandoa5k · 15/06/2009 18:21

9-5=4
6/3=2
7+1=8

Marthasmama · 15/06/2009 18:23

C & F have to be either 2 and 3 or 2 and 4 don't they....? Ooo!
6/3 =2
9-5 = 4
7+1 = 8
2 x 4 = 8

psychomum5 · 15/06/2009 18:23

if they cannot do it, you write a note telling the teacher so.

the teacher cannot possibly help your child learn if you do their homework.

this is what I do........if I cannot help, I tell the teacher and she appreciates it as it shows her that her method of teaching is not helping this particular child (in my case my DS2).

Marthasmama · 15/06/2009 18:24

Damn you goblin! I was so proud of myself that I couldn't type fast enough to beat you!

glinda · 15/06/2009 18:24

9-5=4
6/3=2
7=1=8

SoupDragon · 15/06/2009 18:25

It's basically a process of elimination and using logical thinking. I'm surprised it's Y3 homework though.

lexcat · 15/06/2009 18:27

Thanks thats great I was so close I had the had the 8 but had 2 and 4 muddled with give dd one of the numbers for the boxes and see how she goes.

goblincandoa5k · 15/06/2009 18:29

Sorry Marthasmama

Can someone set us another one - calculators at dawn

Marthasmama · 15/06/2009 18:31

I would have been faster if I hadn't been so excited about getting it that I lost the ability to type! Maths is not really my thing so I was amazed. I suspect if another challenge was set, I would fail miserably!
