Small school uniform needed for dd with tiny waist

Dd is 4.3 and will be starting school in September. I was looking at the uniform in M&S yesterday and found a skirt for age 3 but the waist was far too big (and just fell straight down). I was wondering if anyone knows of somewhere that sells uniform for very slim children. I'm not quite sure what her waist size is (will check later) but she can easily fit into 12-18 months skirts (they're just too short) and has a tiny bum. She's just over a metre in height.

Lots of shops , John Lewis, Next etc do skirts with adjustable waists. Have you thought about pinafore dresses as an alternative?

Pinafores are much better on infant girls. Bunched up elastic in a skirt isn't very comfortable around the waist.

I have to agree with you castille. Dd has some 3-4 trousers with adjustable waist but I have to pull the elastic in as far as it goes both sides. Fortunately she loves leggings so we don't have to worry too much.

Aaaaah - You suffer with the 'skirt problem' too!

My dd and I also have a problem with skirts - she has a poppy tummy and tiny bummy - which means skirts tend slip then rest at her knees!

For this reason she basically lives in dresses.

My DS1 was less than a metre and slender when he started school. I got all the adjustable waist stuff from M&S in age three. He's just the right height for it now at 5.6! All the little girls in his class wore pinafores.

What do you need for PE? I ordered age three gymshorts from M&S and they were far too big around the waist and couldn't be taken in. I picked up some shorts from White Company (in a refitting sale and still twice the price of anywhere else) which fit properly. You may have to be creative with this one. Leggings?

teafortwo - she's always been of odd proportions. I've never been able to buy her any skirt/top sets. I would have to buy 2 different sizes.

Bless your ds ThingOne. My dd's always been small like me. It surprises me though because dh is 6'7" so I assumed she would be quite tall. dh's whole family are tall - even his nan towers over me at 6'.

We should be ok for PE. She needs navy or black shorts and she already has a pair of navy shorts for pre-school which I got from the school uniform shop in town. I think it's a 14" waist. The label says 14/16 and it was the smallest one they could get. They're slightly faded at the edges but I'm sure no one will mind

He's not even the smallest GillL - there are a couple of smaller boys in the year (58) and in his own class there are two smaller girls! We must have all our towns teeny tiny children in one class.

And indeed who gives a monkeys about faded ages for PE kit? You don't get to see it anyway.

DD started school in September and she too is little. I bought her an age 3 adjustable skirt from M&S and although I could get it to fit, the poor girl had big welt marks on her sides after wearing it once as it bunched up so much. She wore age 3 pinafores after that. She is now in summer dresses and I can only find age 4 which looks like tents, but at least they don't fall down A friend mentioned yesterday that if the dresses last, she could still be wearing them in year 4!

PE kit we got from Adams in age 3 and its been ok but that's not really an option anymore as they've gone! Tesco are usually quite good, although the uniform I have from there is big, but that's nothing new!

My girls are slim with tiny waists and have never worn skirts to school. They wore pinafores (much more practical anyway IMO) and then trousers with adjustable waists in the winter.

The bonus with dresses is that they last for ages as they only grow out of them when they become too short which can take ages.

Even now DD1 is nearly 11, with a 19" waist and could wear skirts to fit a 4 year old! (But of course they skim her bum so she doesn't wear them!)

My ds had a tiny waist when he started reception last year. The only place I found uniform that fitted him was Debenhams. Not as cheap as some of the others, but at least they didn't fall down!!!

My DD found M&S skirts too huge for her... so I bought her some pinafore dresses, however they are not 'cool' at her school, so she ended up in Mothercare skirts, which fitted her fine with the adjustable waists. HTH

Can't believe you have so many little ones in your ds' class ThingOne. Dd has always hovered around the 25th centile for height and is the smallest out of all the other children we know her age. The good thing about that though is that we rarely have to buy her clothes as we get lots passed on.

Thanks for the idea about Debenhams hellion. Dd loves trousers so maybe they'll have some which fit nicely without having to adjust the waist.

A word of advice re: pinafores - absolutely ideal if , like me, you have DDs who are on the slim side BUT DONT PUT THEM ON HER ON A DAY WITH P.E!!! try George at Asda or John Lewis for stretchy trousers.

I use pinafore dresses with DD1, she is veyr tall but very slim so skirts that fit end up round her bum and trousers that fit her waist look like culottes.
I put her in a pinafore dress with leggings and socks (she can't 'work' tights apparently) and on gym days she wears trousers that I have added elastic to.

I tried the adjustable waists but they don't adjust small enbough on teh 5-6 years ones that she needs!

I too have a similar problem with my DD. She's just turned 5 but is already almost the height of a 6yr old - but about age 2 around the waist!!

I've put her in jersey pinafores - so they are easier for her to take off for PE than the traditonal material ones. They are baggy but at least they don't fall down.

I have bought her 1 skirt (which it've had to sew a 2" fold into the waist) and 1 pair of trousers that have an adjustable waist but the gathered elastic is still too big.

Normally she wears leggings after school with longer length tops but I still have to either sew the waists smaller or use a safety pin .

Although I'm not slim like she is - my waist has always been a size smaller than the rest of me so maybe it's hereditary
