Y1 book suggestions for independent reading!

DD doesn't get her books changed very often at school. Once or twice a week is the norm. They were changed every night at her last school so all a bit different for us.

I am not overly bothered about this as DD will read everything and anything she can find, signs, cereal packets, adverts etc but I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good reading book scheme to encourage her independent reading.

She's capable of reading by herself but seems to devour the thin children's books we have here but struggles with the thicker no picture type book I would normally read to her.

To read on her own my dd loves Horrid Henry at the moment, also the unending series of Rainbow Fairies books!

I found a set called the Walker Series and ordered them from Red House books. The dss (Reception and Y2) both love them. They are a bit too long for ds2 but I'm sure they would be fine for your dd.

There's a set of books called serioulsy silly stories which twist the usual fairy tales ad make them funny. Ds who never wants to read had read a few of these. I'll try and find a link.

Milly Molly Mandy and Mrs Pepperpot Stories are great!

Has she read things like the Blue Banana books (different colours for different levels)? lsom there are lots of other first easy readers for newly confident books too - some have nice short chapters and clear colour pictures.

Or is she ready to try some bigger books?

Ahlberg do some nice ones - there are 4 in the range, such as The Man Who Wore All His Clothes. Very short chapters, good pictures and funny storyline.

Daisy and the Trouble With.... are good too. A bit bigger than the above but short chapters again and nicely spaced out, with decent sized font. Has some images in it too.

There are lots of books for developing readers which most libraries stock. Examples are Corgi Sprinters, Blue/yellow/red bananas etc. These books tend to have lots of pictures (often colour), short chapters and are designed for KS1 children.

I would ask your librarian. My year 1 dd loves these, because she can read the whole story in one sitting, and they are a good bridge between picture books and longer children's books.

I was going to suggest the Bananas series too (publisher is Egmont)
