What do you think about primary languages?

Now that all schools have to teach a modern language at KS2, something has had to give way in the curriculum to make time for it.

In dd's school, the required hour's been taken half from literacy and half from numeracy.

Any thoughts?

If they are learning via immersion then great; if they are getting regular exposure from a native speaker then pretty good although important not to over-sell what it will achieve; if neither of those can be managed then I think they'd be better off learning Latin which will prime them for the ideas involved in learning another language without having to worry about perfect pronunciation. Mind you, I think Latin's a good idea anyway.
