application under consideration

We got our application outcome for primary school today. It says:
1st preference - application under consideration
2nd preference - place allocated
3rd preference - withdrawn from process

What does this mean?
To me this sounds like we're not ruled out of the 1st preference.
So, what? Do I ring that 1st preference school next week to see what the score is?
Or are we definately just down for the 2nd preference?

Yep it's fine I'd be happy with either of the first 2.

If the first school is a voluntary-aided/faith school, they may have their own admissions criteria & are still sorting out the places.

That'd make sense LadyofShalott, but it is just a community school. But it does sound like they might be still sorting out places.
I'm feeling a bit like we've still got a choice to make, even though the applications are supposed to be done and sorted now.
