Does the difference between boys and girls astound you. or is it just me...?

I mean specifically about drawing. DS in reception. This morning when I left him, he'd been asked to draw some fruit. He's happily scrawling out a banana - you could tell because it was yellow [sink]. All boys the same, whereas the girls were drawing fruit bowls with totally recognisable contents. Never ceases to amaze me. When's it even out then? Ever..?

Mine nearly five too. He does do people, but sometimes it's hard to tell.. At the weekend he drew a fantastic hedgehog. I upset him by praising it, as apparently it was a shark

lol Smee!. I learnt with my DS very early on not to praise any drawing until after I'd asked hime to 'tell me all about' his picture in the hope that I'd pick up some clues! IME the differences between boys and girls is not just in drawing. DD is July birthday, whereas DS is Nov, but she is way ahead of him at this stage - mainly because she WANTS to do everything that her teachers asks, whereas DS spent as much time as possible playing outside in the mud.

I always knew ds was a big girl. He's fantastic at drawing and is regularly asked to draw things for school projects. He is 5. Here is an example of his work.

So when do they catch up with the girls then? Is it at about seven?

I have to say DS is 7.5 and is now one of the top in his class. I think it just took the right teacher to get him motivated (as well as a restriction in the amount of time spent in the mud outdoor learning area! Also of course they are all different and some are better at somethings than others.

ds (7) drew robot houses at easter. a whole street of them.

Oh bugger. Hmmm it works for me. Oh well. I can only assume it's my gorgeous lo, so thank you.

Its not all girls though. My DD (4) cannot draw anything recognisable and some of her boy pals can draw better than my eldest who is 6 (but is a boy). Maybe I have very unartistic children!

DS1 is pretty good at drawing if he can be bothered and at nearly 5 about the same as the girls.

However what does astound me is how calm the girls seem to be. Boys in his Reception spend all their time until they are called into class playing in the bushes 'shooting' each other with twigs. The girls stand nicely with their Mums or chat to their friends Sure Mums of girls would tell me something different....

No, it never does. That's why there are no fabulous male artists

Wow spinspinsugar, am impressed she can do that at nearly three. DS would struggle and he's nearly five. Am even more impressed that your son sits still for that long every day though

It astounds me too. Even when children get older and boys drawing ability catches up with girls, their pictures are totally different. I have two girls and I love their art, but I also love looking at my nephew's pictures. They tend to be very action led, lots of robots and monsters. Also he often uses a comic strip style, which my dd's never do. My dd's draw lots of people, rainbows, fairies, teddies etc. It does not occur to them to draw robots, anymore than my nephew would dream of drawing a fairy.
