Am I silly or ......?

A lot of kids in my DD s class (Yr 3) have started tutoring. My Dd, in Yr 3 is achieving a level 4c and I m not doing anything outside school. (Other than kumon maths becos it keeps her busy) is such a child grammar school material and do I need to start the tutoring so early? or can we just do some practice at home and hope for the best. She is also on the G & T register if that means anything.

Leave her be! She is achieving significantly above the expected level for her age and doesn't need tutoring.

If you want her to go to grammar school then tutoring may help. Not because she needs it academically but because she will need practice at VR and NVR. You can do this practice at home though just by buying the papers. If you do go down that route, I'd wait until year5 as she seems to be doing fine.

Is it possible to buy previous years papers for VR and NVR? I cant spend lot of time with my Dd because I have a special needs child as well. Can a child just get on and do it themselves when I get her the stuff that is.

What is VR and NVR?

Although I'd leave it until yr5 tbh. It can be quite dull and might put her off.

VR is Verbal reasoning and NVR is Non Verbal reasoning. However I am rubbish at both.

Strongly recommend that you do two things:-

Wait until start year five

THEN get your child assessed by a educational psychologist
the British Psychological Society will help you find one in private practice -google-. They will put them through a battery of tests and be able to give you good advice as to whether your child would both be able to do the exams well enough to get into Grammer School and do well in that sort of environment.

if the verdict is go for it, get a tutor, starting in year five.

Or you could, at the beginning of year 5, go to WH Smiths and buy a set of past papers - making sure they are the appropriate ones for your area-then sit her down and get her to run through them. That'll give you an idea of how she's getting on without swelling the coffers of aneducational psychologist!
