year3 number reversal

Have parents evening on Wednesday and wanted to be armed with some facts.

DD frequently writes the numbers 2,3,4,5,7,and9 backwards, also when asking her some mental maths she will tell you the answer in reverse i.e will say 21 when she means 12. Also when writing double digits she will often reverse them and write them backwards. She has had similar issues in the past with reversing letters but now doesn't do this. When labeling diagrams if she is labeling on the left of the diagram she will "mirror" write the entire word. I keep being told that she will "grow" out of this in her own time but surely over half way through year three this isn't "normal"?

My DD is 11 and only just grown out of letter reversal. Is she left handed?

My niece did it and then suddenly stopped - can't remember when though. But she would write entire sentences backwards!

My son used to do this but is in Year 3 now and it stopped in Year 1.

Why don't you ask the teachers what you can do to help your daughter? If it's normal, I don't know what they can suggest, but it's always worth a try.

My year 2 ds still does this. I am mentioning it at parents evening also.

Thankyou juggling woman, I ask the teachers at every single parents evening and I get the same reply "remind her to write them the correct way and to ask her to corrct any that she has already written" which we do, but she just continues in her merry way. Argh!

Hmm. Have you had the same response from more than one teacher? Last years teacher took nearly the whole year to tell us that our son was a year behind in maths (and also having a learning support assistant we knew nothing about) and that we should help him more. This years teacher has told us how he learns. Otherwise, does your daughter's school have any learning support assistants/TA's? I found my sons was a lot more 'practical' in how to help him.

If your daughter carries on regardless, does she realise there's a problem? Just wondering if lots of praise would make her try or, if she is trying and just doesn't know she's doing it wrong as she's seeing it right (if you understand what I'm trying to say)?

DS is 7 and still writes several numbers and letters backwards. He is left handed and his teacher has also said 'he has dsylexic tendencies'. However, he does not do this with every letter/number all the time and has improved a lot since last year. I think he just forgets which way they go because when he is practising at home and concentrating, he asks me 'which way does a b go mummy' - it is when he is writing in a hurry and not concentrating that they come out backwards.

When I see some of his classmates writing I see that they also do this with a few letters (don't know about numbers) so I think this is fairly common - there was a similar post to this last week.

Thankyou for your replies, had parents evening last night and highlighted my concerns again. Her teacher doesn't think that the number reversal is anything to worry about as she can identify when asked what is wrong, it seems to be more of a habit. As for getting double digits wrong way around and back to front she feels that she is just getting her columnes wrong (tens and units etc). Funnily enough she is however very weak at maths and she is going to instigate more help for her (she already does small group work with the TA for this).

What came up last night as a major concern is that her reading has not improved at all since Sept and she is now one of the weakest readers in her class, which is in total contrast to her elder siblings who were/are excellent and very able readers. I know that we shouldn't compare but still....
