What day does your Reception age child start school this year? Coz mine seems a wee bit pointless...

DD2 starts school this year. On a friday - but afternoon only (1-3.15pm).

She's a summer born baby. Is there a reason why all the autumn and spring born children start full-time the day before and not them? Just seems a bit of a waste of time to me - if she was there from 9am I could understand but two and a quarter hours???

In our school if you are born between Sept and Dec 31 you will go full time in Sept. If you are born between Jan and Easter you will go mornings only for autumn term and full time from Jan.

If you are born after Easter you will go mornings only till Easter and then full time.

Another school locally does all rising 5's mornings only till Christmas and all full time afterwards.

I would say it does seem a bit pointless one afternoon especially as it's not the age of the child that makes them ready for full time school but the maturety (sorry about spelling) of the 4-5 year old and whether they can cope with it.

At the dc's school all children start at 8.45am on the Tuesday or Wednesday (depending on INSET)

Optional half days for the first week but no-one usually takes up the half day option.

Mine did 9.45 to 11.45 the first day but if they had older siblings they could start at 8.45 for mums already dropping off. From day two it was 8.45/8.55 for all.

Thanks ladies. Her sister who will be moving up to year 1 starts the day before. I guess I just presumed they'd all be starting on the same day as DD2 would have done all her 'introduction' slots in june and july before school breaks up for summer.

Ours start at weekly intervals. Autumn/winter born first, then spring born, then summer born.

So DD2 (August b'day) will have an 11 week long summer holiday (for which I need to find childcare ). Then she will start school, by which time the oldest kids will have already established a pecking order and will have learned that the last group to start are the "babies" (sigh).

Or at least, that's how it happened with her summer-born sister three years ago.
