What about a roald dahl character? Mr Twit? (really easy, beard with sponge beans, plastic food) Enormous crocodile? BFG? Fantastic Mr Fox?

scrooged · 02/03/2009 20:23

You could make some butterfly wings and send him as the very hungry caterpillar, cake and all

stealthsquiggle · 02/03/2009 20:25

Captain Patch (The Night Pirates)?

Mr Men seem quite popular?

Nothing on the 'stickied' MNTowers thread?

Freckles78 · 02/03/2009 20:46

Where's wally? Zorro? A Musketeer? Have stacks of girl ones but am lacking for inspiration for boys too!

mrsmaidamess · 02/03/2009 20:47

Do you have any dressing up stuff that can be tenuosly linked to books? My 5 year old is going as Scooby Doo!

slightlyonedgemum · 02/03/2009 20:49

Where the Wild Things are. If you have a wolf type costume or just hands and feet he can wear normal clothes and mess his hair up. Bought a wig and pretend fang necklace for my son to add to his werewolf trousers (with feet) from halloween. Had great fun messing up the wig to look 'wild'!

Most books enjoyed by small boys seem to have animal heroes, which makes life a lot harder.

If you own (and don't especially love) a velvet jacket you could attempt Willy Wonka?

lauradora · 02/03/2009 22:05

harry potter... rugby shirt, jeans, trainers, make a scar on his forehead with your lipliner, give him a broomstick and hey presto!

my y2 ds (along with half his year group) is going in Arsenal strip and taking his Arsenal annual. I work in the school and yet I am still powerless. HT has given in.... We don't 'do' dressing up at 7 - apparently. DD (5) is a different matter - I am not looking forward toWeds night... and I have to think of an outfit for me too!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

scrooged · 02/03/2009 22:12

ds is going as King Arthur. He's 9 though.

sphil · 03/03/2009 22:29

DS1 is going as a Viking (actually Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III from the Cressida Cowell books). We already had a helmet - add long sleeved T shirt, gilet, sword and you're there. He's 7.5 though. DS2 (6) is going as Robin Hood - all green clothes + hat.

ChasingSquirrels · 03/03/2009 22:33

ds2 (6y - yr1) wants to go as Tom out of BeastQuest

Me: what does he wear?
ds: a belt
me: and?
ds: raggdy clothes

ok - so that's easy, everyday clothes with a belt, but no one will know who he is being.

sphil · 03/03/2009 22:51

Ah - my Dses have to take a book with them too, so I am making sure they take the book their character comes from...
