HIya, you okay darling? Can I get your opinion on something please?

I've been doing a regular supply slot at a gorgeous little Catholic (!I know) school in S.O.S lately. They seem to be booking me for every Fri am for the DH's management time. The school is ace, the class is smashing and I love it. The Head has also said to me that there is going to be a job going in Y5 and to keep my eye out. Am quite hopeful!

How can I make myself the ideal candidate for the job (bearing in mind the qualif's issue?)

Thanks for the headsup about SassyInterloper, have left a few messages for her around the board. Typical - the minute I dare to revert, they pop up all over the place. It's like WhackAMole!!

I'm heeeeeeeere!

Have you made it clear to them that you'd be interested if it comes up?

Any chance you could offer to go in and do some planning with teachers from other years? Shows willing, gives a good impression, gives you more to talk about on your application and at interview etc.

Are you getting any other primary supply at the moment? The more you get, the more qualified it makes you IYSWIM. Find out who the Head is friends with (headteacher wise) and target their school and try and do some supply there????

E-mail me and tell me which school in SOS it is. I don't know any of the catholic schools though, so I prob won't be of any help at all on that score!

However, I have worked in 2 church schools (1 catholic, 1 cofE) so might be able to help with a couple of juicy phrases when you're writing your application form.

BTW - how bloody exciting to have a thread with my name in the title!!!!!!!

Yes, the conversation was along the lines of the Head asking if I had any permanant work at the mo, me saying yes, secondary, but really my heart is with Y5/6 and I'm looking to transfer. Then he said about the job, I said Ooh, will def look out for that. Haven't seen him about since. I might try and speak to him if they book me again for after half term, then ask about obs with other year groups etc.

Bet you were gutted when you realised it was just me looking for you!!!

Oh yeah, doing quite a bit of supply elsewhere; averaged about half a day p/wk in other schools this half term. Glad you think it is promising.

I think you just need to make yourself as visible as possible.

If you get booked to do more supply next half term - could you offer to do a lunchtime club on the same day? It would give you an opportunity to have another chat with the Headteacher etc. It would make them see that you are pro-active and enthusiastic etc.

sassy · 11/02/2009 21:25

Hmmm, you think? That wouldn't be too pushy?

What sort of club would you suggest? Or just assist at one that is already running?

(Can you tell I would lurrrve this job ?)

If you google catholic primary in SOS you will get the name of the school

I think that if you went and said

"As you know, I'm really interested in teaching in Primary and although I've run lots of clubs in secondary, I'd love to have the chance to try out a few ideas in a Primary club. Would you be interested in me running a drama/poetry/performance club for years 3,4,5,6 for half an hour on a Friday lunchtime - would you like to think about it as a G&T club, or as one that's open to all"

I bet he would bite your hand off!

Littlefish · 11/02/2009 21:32

Ah, just googled! Now I know which one you mean.

sassy · 11/02/2009 21:37

Eeeee. Lots to think about. Hmmm.

I'll wait and see if they book me again for after half term; if they do I'll def take your advice. Thanks for letting me bend you ear!
