hello - think I've sort of replied on other thread !

dinny · 01/02/2009 19:54

hello, LIZS

found it, thanks
what is O? was that bit in response to me? can't think.... place?

so, just phone GJ and have chat, you think? wonder what the chance is for reception 09....prob not great (for ds)

it'd be just normal places we'd apply for - and just when (and IF) they became available

Town along the road the other way from you - several private schools in that area too! GJ is lovely and was particularly helpful when we were waiting from abroad. Not sure what the situation is like for Sept 09 already, when ds applied to yr 3 offers went out in December. But then one child only got his place in the July so someone must have pulled out late. Obviously things have changed in the intervening years but there is an open morning later this month so I'd suggest you enquire ahead of that.

dinny · 01/02/2009 20:51

oh yes, of course I know O!

thing is, don't mind being on waiting list - they are happy where they are (in dd's case - at last!).....

someone I know is taking their dd out of L in O as there are only FOUR left in her year!

OP posts:
LIZS · 01/02/2009 20:56

Should be ok eventually then , ds' year has had several come and go in past 3 years or so therefore places do come up. Once one is in the other gets priority as a sibling. One local school is just going coed (W?) and would be very keen to take boys !

dinny · 01/02/2009 21:26

W........ can't think what that is!

L in O has gone co-ed.....would dd be in your dd's yr? she's the one above, isn't she?

I won't be at dance for a wee while - my friend is taking dd and her dd as am mahoosive and ready to drop!

btw, what school are you thinking after H? the best thing for us would be house buying, won't be confined to staying in catchment for O

OP posts:
LIZS · 02/02/2009 08:34

maybe I'm thinking of L then - if they've only got 4 in a class and struggling then I guess it is the obvious thing to do. Possibly C or LND for secondary, have moments when I regret not having applied for a place for ds at 11+ as a back up - heigh ho ! dd is very different to him so maybe not even the same one for each. She's year above yours so still time to decide. We moved dancing to a later session (not exactly sure why, dh usually takes her, something to do with changing curriculum) but she's back with her school friends so happy.

dinny · 02/02/2009 10:14

presuming H is shut today?

mmmm, we are looking at C Prep too.......

can't think what LND is..

OP posts:
LIZS · 02/02/2009 13:13

no not completely shut, dc went in and joined a few others !!!! I've got to walk down to collect them soon and it is now sheeting down. LND is a bit further south of you. Was very impressed when I visited with ds.

LIZS · 02/02/2009 18:13

shut tomorrow though

dinny · 02/02/2009 18:27

ah, I know where you mean

a friend has a dd there - really likes it

OP posts:
dinny · 02/02/2009 18:35

was there modern today? we didn't risk it!

OP posts:
LIZS · 02/02/2009 18:45

No really just a childcare service for those who braved it - no school lessons , no sports centre, swimming or dance. More staff than kids !

LIZS · 08/02/2009 20:51

I see H wood have an open day this week(Weds?) , if you haven't already looked into it.

dinny · 14/02/2009 19:23

LIZS, dd has assessment day at H very soon!!! Am nervous - hope they offer her a place!

bump for LIZS...

LIZS · 16/02/2009 14:59

hello , sorry been offline for a few days due to pc crashing . Excellent news, good luck to her. dd's class had several visitors last year too. They do a mixture of in-class activities and assessment in English and Maths by a teacher one-to-one. Nothing too stressful !

Just saw your query about 11 and 13. ds's year has relatively few girls (about 35:65, most are nearer 50:50) and many of them are planning to stay on at present. Much is made about readiness to leave at 11 and obviously you really ought to if you intend to go state for secondary but most independents have entry points at either. The year groups are smaller and friendly for Years 7 and 8 with lots of opportunities which might overwhelm them among a larger secondary intake at 11. Obviously it is in a prep schools interest to keep them longer , so they do a good sell on it and recruit into Year 7, however I think it is nice to have that option. Depending on where ds goes and how dd is doing we may yet decide to move her at 11 but 13 seems right for ds.

dinny · 16/02/2009 16:29

just wonder if she'll be up to the standard they want....hope so, think our school is quite string academically, but dd certainly isn't top of the class in it or anything. about middle I'd say

went to see LND as well - MUCH prefer H

OP posts:
LIZS · 16/02/2009 17:24

She'll probably be fine . Depends on demand as to how stringent they are but if they are seeing her it suggests they aren't oversubscribed so flexible. There is a real range of abilities and strengths, not purely academic. When does she visit ?

dinny · 16/02/2009 18:17

I think there are two places maybe coming up....

head did say it was quite broad, to meet her and see if she'd fit. she visits a week after half term...

que ce ra, I suppose - will be huge financial saving if they don't offer her a place!

am also presuming we'd be an attractive proposition as we have another younger child (and another on the way)?

OP posts:
LIZS · 16/02/2009 18:25

Is she meeting the Head of Pre-Prep or Lower Prep School ?

dinny · 16/02/2009 18:29

not sure - G writing to confirm details

she's spending the day with Y2 (her peers)

LIZS · 28/02/2009 12:06

any update Dinny , haven't seen you on here for a bit ? With Surrey CC admissions out today I wonder if that will have an impact.

wrolf · 28/02/2009 18:35

hi LIZS (namechange here)

she's spending the day there this week.....will let you know!

yeah, ds got his place through today at where we are atm

LIZS · 01/03/2009 10:44

ah that'll be why I've missed you ! Thought maybe your absence was pg related. Good luck for this week, hope she enjoys it .
