recycling wanted for junk modelling - toilet rolls ok or not?!

DD1 is in reception and over the next few weeks they are making models of toys etc. We have been asked to send in small boxes, yoghurt pots, cardboard tubes etc...

would you send in toilet roll tubes or not? I think yes but not sure if this is unhygienic or not?!

The letter did say "no big cereal boxes" so i guess they would also have said "no toilet rolls please" if they didn't want them.

Thoughts?!?

I used to send in toilet roll tubes. no-one said anything.

The only thing they didn't allow was empty matchboxes. Not sure why.

Our school will not accept toilet rolls or egg boxes for art work.

Health & Safety have banned toilet rolls being used for crafts in schools, nurseries etc. You can use egg boxes if they are 'sterilised' for few mins in microwave first. Kitchen Roll, foil roll etc is allowed.

How interesting! dd's school seemed fine with toilet rolls and egg boxes, for Xmas craft project.

i can understand about egg boxes, DD2 has an egg allergy and could have a problem if accidentally handled raw egg. but i would imagine she would keep away and/or the teacher would ensure she did.

Urban myth

i saw one of the mums who was helping them make their models yesterday and i asked if they were ok with toilet rolls - she said, "yes, why?" apparently they have loads and been using them quite happily.

Hi all, new girl on here but found this thread when doing a search about use of eggboxes & loo rolls in crafts for a course I am doing & thought you might like to know it is definitely an urban myth.
The Health & Safety Executive publish a myth of the month on their website & this is on there. They have not banned the use of egg boxes or loo rolls & on their site it says 'as long as egg boxes & toilet roll centres look clean there is no reason why they should not be used'

Ah interesting, we got a note home asking for boxes etc for junk modelling, and it said "no toilet rolls please" - I just assumed it was because they probably already had loads!

I always sent in loo rolls! No one ever said anything.
However was extremeley shocked to find my DD made a junk robot out of yogurt pots etc with a durex packet stuck to his front!!

I never found out which mum it was that submitted that item to the school junk modelling collection!

If you go to the HSE (Health and Safety Exective) website, and look under Urban Myths you'll find that they have not banned toilet roll inners or egg boxes. The common sense argument by them is if it is clean, use it! As a childminder I checked with Ofsted and they said to follow whatever advise the HSE has given - just to cover myself I have printed the poster published and put it in my junk modelling box(think it was August 2007 so it shows how long this has been going around!)
Remember, IF ITS CLEAN, USE IT!!

Ooh we've just asked for junk at our school...it's a very revealing insight into other peoples lives. We had thinning hair treatment boxes and all sorts

Seriously though - toilet rolls live in the toilet, right next to it. Children don't!

This story started after a school briefly banned children from using cardboard egg boxes to make things, threatening years of Blue Peter tradition. They were concerned that children might catch salmonella.

Within a few days the school realised there was guidance from the County Council and an organisation for teachers called CLEAPSS, making clear that as long as egg boxes and toilet roll centres look clean, there is no reason why they should not be used.

The Health and Safety Team at East Sussex follows CLEAPSS guidance which is stated as follows: ?we do not believe there is a significant problem and doubt if pupils using clean looking egg boxes or toilet roll centres will be exposed to more bacteria than in ordinary day to day living.? It is recommended that sensible precautions are taken, such as a basic visual check for contamination on the boxes or sleeves, then there is no reason why such items should not be used."
