I have a boy who is 4 and a half and can't write small as in the lines. He is in reception and every morning the kids go in and have to do writing letters all the kids can do hand writing small and in the lines.he can write the letters but they are big he can't do them small. The teacher said he did some writing the other day but wasn't concentrating and she couln't read it.The other kids have commented on it and the teacher said not to worry but i can't help it.he is one of the youngest in his class and does not like writing (likes reading).i just hope he's going to get it before he starts year one.

erm,4and ahalf you say??
too young to be writng small and on lines imho

My 7 year old still struggles with this. I'm so glad when he chooses to write independently, I don't push him to write on lines. He will usually use a bit of plain paper. At 4 1/2 most DC will not have the fine motor skills developed enough to write small and on lines. Like his teacher said don't worry. He'll get there in his own time.

don't think other kids will notice in the slightest and i'd be very surprised if many of them do it at all.
does he do colouring in?that helps to develop writing skills, and dot to dots etc

At 4 1/2, I'd say that your DS is the normal child!

at dd's school they concentrate first on getting the letter formation and only then do they start to work on making the letters smaller and neater. DD has levitating letters quite a lot!!

ds is going on for 6 and he's only recently started writing small enough to fit in any lines.

don't worry, they all start writing big letters and can reduce the size over time. it takes time and practice and it will surely take just as long to develop the fine motor skills for all the kids, yours is just one of the younger ones who need time to grow and develop to reach the same age as the kids who can already write small letters.

He sounds absolutely fine. He is still very young and (going on friends' and my experience) many boys don't enjoy having to sit down and write letters and don't put much effort into it. If you're worried, there are activity/workbooks available in places like WH Smith, but colouring in and dot-to-dots are more fun!

yes and at ds school they learn proper handwriting in yr 1 which ,cos it was harder than printing was also big,but getting smaller by end of yr1 and more or less under control now in yr2
but at home still does big letters /numbers if no lines etc sometimes
