Are there any Governors on here? What does it involve? How shld I go about getting votes from Parents? I am a 2ndary school teacher part time so I know a lot about education, and wld like to be involved in the school in this way. But as the parents elect, is it just a case of who is more popular or what? As I don't know many parents very well, my dd1 is in Reception and I'm new to the area.

No personal experience, but you could try the following - I work in a school and these are a few that are used by ours:

www.governornet.co.uk

www.directgov.uk (search on 'School Governors')

Lots of places don't get many people wanting to be parent-governors and therefore you get on by default

I've recently become a governor by default. They had two places and only two of us offered. I was in the same position as you (dd is in reception and I know very few parents at the school) and I wonder if I would have been elected if it had gone to the vote. In an election, I imagine very few parents would vote, and those that do would probably vote for parents they know. Turned out not to matter though and first meeting is in a few weeks time.

Good luck. I think it will be very interesting.

Why don't people want to be parent governors?

I have been a school governor for a number of years. Obviously I think it worthwhile otherwise I would not still do it.

if you want to get in touch I have contact details on my profile, we could perhaps, talk on the phone.

(feeling too lazy tonight to type.)
