Does your Year 1 child get new books every day?

Just wondered,as dd1 has been moved up a level to 'Red' books.[don't quite understand what this means btw].She has a note in her reading book to remind her to change her 2 books daily now.I love reading and am pleased dd does,but am I meant to listen to her read 2 new books every night now? Along with the other homework,it is a bit of a squeeze sometimes,so we don't always manage both books.

I am trying to arrange to ask her teacher about it,but she's not been in this week so far.

Does anyone else's child have this? It seems a lot for someone who is only just 5 somehow.

Ds is in yr 1 and he gets two new books every thursday so we alternate the books each night.

Two a night is alot and Ds certainly wouldn't manage that.

Gosh that doesnt sound right to me, my god thats enough to put her off reading full stop!!

My DD also in year one has her reading book changed (by teacher/TA) twice a week.

Ds2 gets one book usually, sometimes two. He's just starting to enjoy books and reading but two books a night would almost certainly put him off.

One book a week for ds2, not per night.

my ds is in year 1 and gets a new reading book every time we write a comment regarding how he has managed the current one. Not sure this is entirely the best method but means we can skip a night every now and then without feeling bad and still get through several books a week. ds has been slow to pick up reading up till now and sees it as a chore, but at least it is an expected chore!

I'm glad this has come up as we have recently changed primary schools due to a move back to the UK from abroad (UK school abroad though).

At her previous school she was getting a new book every day ( as long as she had read it and it was recorded in her reading record). I thought this was the norm, we got ourselves in a routine and managed and enjoyed it most nights. (School hours are different where we were 07.20 - 12.30 so all afternoon off).

In her new school she seems to have her books changed once a week and she will come home with 2. I was thinking of asking her teacher if she could change them more often but if this is the norm then maybe I shouldn't. We manage to read most nights but with the change in school timings we are finding it harder to fit in.

DD is 5 in Year 1 btw.

Children at our school change their books for themselves, usually first thing in the morning with a parent. Most have a new book every day but some keep it for a few days. There is no pressure but they are encouraged to remember to change their own books when necessary.

ds has two books per week

we barely manage that as he's a reluctant reader at home

No, dd gets 1 book a week and I'm encouraged to read lots of other things with her at home. She also doesn't get homework other than a short list of spellings over the weekend. I thought Y1 kids weren't supposed to get homework?

ggirl - would you prefer it if he only had 1 book a week then?

nappy - no I think 2 is ok atm .or we'll never get through the stages.We quite often only read one though.
I wish he was more enthusiastic at home .

1 book week for DS1 too. I don't worry, he reads masses at home anyway but I think an ideal would be 2 a week, not 2 a night. DS1 found learning to read so I think he would have coped quite well with more books but thats not true of all children.

DS2 is a summer born in reception and I find he really benefits from reading the same book over several nights, its definitely helping to build his confidence that he can recognise words.

DD is in yr 1 and changes her books when she wants (within reason, i.e. if she's read the same book twice, then I tell her to change it). We have 2 or 3 a week.

Ds2 is P1. He gets a new book twice a week with written homework relating to the book. He loves it. Should note that the written stuff is low key - for Monday he has to write down the name of his favourite author and the title of his favourite book.

I wish dd got that many, she loves reading but is only in reception, she's reeding at year 1 level but only gets 2 books a week.

DS1 got 4 books a week in Y1, if he had finished them (Monday to Thursday). DS2 was reading long books by then so he just changed them when he was finished.

Yes nappyaddict once a week for both. DS2 has a 'library' book for us to share which he reads a bit of aswell. DS2 does guided reading on a Monday and then has that book for the rest of the week. As he gets better at reading I will supplement with books at home as I did with DS1 but at the moment I think its just about building his confidence, having to take it very slowly with him.

I still haven't seen the teacher,as dd2 has been ill,so not been into the school since Tuesday.I'm not concerned so much about the quantity so much,as she does love reading them,it is just the time,trying to get them read & writing in the wretched book! As dd1 is so young,when she comes home,sometimes I feel it is good for her to just do colouring in,playing or watching cbeebies for a bit ect.

As for the homework,there is no big deal if it isn't done,but I get the feeling that there would be if we missed a few weeks worth of it.

I wouldn't be unhappy nappyaddict but I wouldn't want more than twice a week. DS1 only had 1 book a week through reception but is now way beyond his reading age and loves books, he reads to himself for an hour a night in bed.

I think their school day is long enough without having pressure put on them to read lots of an evening. DS2 as one of the youngest would not cope at all if I tried to get him to read more than about 5 mins a night.

OP - sounds excessive!
