DD1 has just bought the a really awful book home from school

Its a songbird phonics one called Tara's Party, its about a 6 year old girl who invited 3 friends to her party and one of them is nasty and mean all the way through, then on the last page when she's picked up by her mum and asks if she had a nice time her reply is no everyone was mean to me.

It has no point and in fact the naughty child seems to get her own way.

Anyone elses chidl read it?

But dd immediately, after reading the last page, piped up 'no-one was nasty to her, she was the nasty one' And then added 'I would have told her mummy she was not very nice'

I did not like that story, I have to admit.

Did DD comment on it, a bit like hippo's DD? If I had a book like that with one of the girl's at school after I would talk about the story and discuss the whole meanness issue.

yep she said similar to hippi's dd, but the story really was awful - DH is going to show it to the teacher, it really need just one more page where Tara's mum tell her how good she was not to lamp Martha one and that she doesn't have to invite her next year!

We did discuss the naughty girl but it really lacked something - even after discussing it the story felt imcomplete.

I agree stardazzle, I felt it needed another two pages on how Martha got her comuppance, or how the mother explains to Martha's mum that she was not very kind.

I felt it was left up to me to fill in the gaps, which is fine, but I like books to privide 'an answer' or 'conclusion' to dd to keep her interested in reading.

We never did show it to the teacher (dd had this book last year) so I'll be interested to hear what your dd's teacher thinks of it.

We had one when dd2 was in reception that had about 20 MacDonalds logo's, dh wrote a very cross note in the reading record.

like you hippi i agree i like books for dd1 (only just 6) to have a beginning, middle and an end, even ones which are part of a series.
