Stupidly easy work, do I challenge it?

My DS is in a low class this year for the first time. He's in year 5 and up until now has always been in the higher class.

Anyway, he's now on the top table of this other class. I wasn't bothered at first. BUT, the work they are doing is ridiculous.

He told me on Friday they were learning their .... 2 times tables! these kids are 9 and 10 years old for gods sake. And apparantly there was one kid who couldn't do it (or pretended he couldn't) so kept giving the wrong answer so the entire class had to wait until he gave the right answer. DS said they were just sat there for ages whilst this kid messed around.

His homework is stupid, last week he brought home a sheet with clock faces on and he had to draw in the hands according to what time it said it was he did that in reception!

And his homwork this week is "multiples of 10" and one of the questions is "10 x 2 = "

It's stupid, I don't want him being held back like this.

Is it worth going in or should I just teach him proper stuff at home to make sure he's being challenged?

There should be differentiation. The top table should be doing work that stretches them more than the bottom table. If they're not, I'd have a word. We fought this battle long and hard in Y1 - it took a new year and a new teacher for someone finally to agree that we were right.
