Can anyone explain the method used for adding up e.g. 39 + 18 . I had been showing my dd old fashioned way i.e. 39 with 18 underneath carrying over the 1 etc, but apparently we are not to show them this as they now use a side by side method , I am now confused myself.....any answers I would be very grateful. it's calle3d smile technique,do units firs t then tens, so you'd get 8+9= 17 and 30+10 = 40 then put them together to make 40+10+7 =57. They join the tens and units together with a curved line, a smile hth

There are other methods too.
Sometimes dss would do (learned at school):
39 + 10 = 49
49 + 1 = 50 (take the 1 off the 8 to make it easier/a round number)
50 + 7 = 57

It's hard to explain, but it is actually the sort of stages that many people use when doing mental maths.
