this is a really simple way to be able to do them
Looks hugely complicated, but it really ISNT, and could really help someone who struggles to remember the tables through ryhme alone.

argh i can't understand it

MamaG · 07/10/2008 13:13

ooh i'll look later

UnfortunatelyMurderedMe · 07/10/2008 13:14

hold your hands up, imagine them as 6-10, as shown...now if you wanted to do 10x 10 you would put your thumbs together...with me?

each finger, UNDER the ones you have put together, is worth 10....so thats 80. The fingers (or thumbs in this case) are also worth 10 each, so thats 20..

so answer is 100.

amazing - it works - but you still need to know your tables up to 5 and you need to get your head around the rules - I am not sure my 7 year old would follow it.

UnfortunatelyMurderedMe · 07/10/2008 13:17

but usually you would have fingers left above, and those, you would multiply.

i'll really try to get this, ds(7) struggles so badly with times tables, they want to get an ed pysch to assess him. prob gets it from me if i can't understand this.

UnfortunatelyMurderedMe · 07/10/2008 13:19

I think if you have someone showing you how it works, and then doing a sum yourself...

this is an incredible way for the 9x table!

actually it is quite nifty one you get the hang of it.

10 for each finger below the toughing two, 20 for the two touching then add on the ones on the left multiplied by the ones on the right above the touching two.

I guess it is quite visual.

UnfortunatelyMurderedMe · 07/10/2008 13:21

sea, work on it, once youve worked out what it is its not so hard honestly, but all those word just make your head go to mush!

I will certainly give it a go with DS (7) who has no interest at all in learning the tables by rote. He works them out in his head every time, which is certainly not the instant recall they are looking for. THis won't be either of course, but I think he'll find it fun.

southeastastra · 07/10/2008 13:34

i will keep looking good site though i love this link!

MamaG · 07/10/2008 13:35

I don't get it either sea

Blu · 07/10/2008 14:01

DS and I do them in exaggerated versions of the voices of the Numberjacks - which makes them more fun to learn and helps him remember them, I think. i.e we do 3X in the voice of '3' etc...

But I will work at those links...

UnfortunatelyMurderedMe · 07/10/2008 14:35

love the link sea, have no idea what base 8 or 10 is, if anyone would kindly explain
