Hi
My ds has just started at a new school and has to wear short trousers and long grey socks.
Do you think its reasonable to expect the children to wear them during the winter also. we have to walk to school and I am not sure about this.

didn't think they still existed!

NoblesseOblige · 05/10/2008 19:12

do you pay to send him there? not being funny AT ALL (before you all jump on me) but it seems to be a peculiarity exclusive to fee paying schools, certainly where i live.

i think it is mad personally and always feel sorry for their cold little knees

avenanap · 05/10/2008 19:12

I think it's mean. Ds's old school used to do this until the boys were in the last class. I thought it was so mean.

LynetteScavo · 05/10/2008 19:13

Isnt' this the case for most pre-prep/prep schools?

avenanap · 05/10/2008 19:14

Are they allowed to wear long socks? Alot of parents sent their boys to school in 2 pairs of long socks in the winter.

skidoodle · 05/10/2008 19:14

Seems a bit silly to me to have strict uniforms for primary school, but I guess you knew about the short trousers thing before you sent him there?

Of course, if he's in secondary school, then it's definitely weird

AbbeyA · 05/10/2008 19:15

I would think it was a private school and I would choose a different one!

AnarchyAunt · 05/10/2008 19:16

If its state and primary, they can't make the children wear anything!

Uniforms are not enforceable at state primary, so if thats where he is just send him in trousers if you are worried he'll be cold.

LilianDale · 05/10/2008 19:16

It's not exclusive to private schools at all. My nephew had to wear shorts at his STATE school until year 6.

espares · 05/10/2008 19:16

No I don,t pay its not private or anything like that.
I don,t mind this in the summer but I think its awful in the winter.
They have to wear a tie also and my ds gets in such a muddle trying to do it.
Its only year 3 and 4 that have to wear the short trousers, year 5 and 6 get to wear long trousers.

It's a prep school thing here, too. Either way, I would lobby the governors to change the uniform policy.

LilianDale · 05/10/2008 19:18

espares, is it a Catholic school by any chance? They seem to like this kind of thing.

NoblesseOblige · 05/10/2008 19:18

oh gosh put him in long trousers and sod em if it's a state school!

LilianDale · 05/10/2008 19:20

My SIL contemplated going for long trousers but the Head Teacher was really stroppy about it.................

espares · 05/10/2008 19:21

I sent him to this school despite the short trousers as it has such glowing ofsted reports.
My mom thinks the short trousers are great and thinks good on them.

Get together with other parents. When it gets cold all send them in long trousers.
Probably better to go through the proper channels and get it changed-get the other parents behind you.

AnarchyAunt · 05/10/2008 19:25

Sounds awful to me, like it cares more about pupils' appearance and academic results than health and warmth.

I'd sod 'em and get him some long trews for winter.

espares · 05/10/2008 19:25

No its not catholic the school is known for being a bit regimental and strict.
They don,t allow any of those fancy patterns or tram lines that boys have in their hair etc.

You can get quite long "shorts" and those (plus long thick socks) can be quite protective!

unfitmother · 05/10/2008 19:28

I'd think they were nuts.

avenanap · 05/10/2008 19:28

What colour are they? I've got a load of brown bermuda shorts and long brown socks you can have.

Marina · 05/10/2008 19:28

Ds prefers shorts and long socks all year round. He hasn't died of hypothermia yet!
I think he wore long trousers because of the cold twice last "winter"

espares · 05/10/2008 19:29

grey unfortunately but thanks

I'd think the headteacher and governors had a very nasty attitude to small children and a warped sense of priorities. And I would think the parents were batty, too, for giving in to it.
