Is kindergarten in the US the same age as reception in the UK?

We're thinking of relocating to the US next year with DH's work. DS is due to start reception in Sept 09 so I wondered if that corresponded with kindergarten in the US? DD will be going into Y3 in Sept 09 so would she transfer to the 3rd grade?

Or is it not that simple?? DD was born Oct 01 and DS was born Nov 04, if that helps??

It is in California.
My nephew has started Kindy the same time as dd2 started reception, and they woul dbe the same school year here.
