Why are wordcard no longer used in yr1

DD is now in yr3, DS is in Yr1. I was expecting him to be bring home word card as she did through out the year, however I am told that this was stopped last year and know they just get reading books. Is this a change in reading policy does anyone know, has anyone else found this or is it just us?

I think it depends on the school.

DD has her word list still (yr1), but I know that they are doing something different in reception this year

Is it because the children don't really need them so much now perhaps? In DD's school children only get flashcards in Reception, and for many children these stop by the end of the first term or two, depending on how quickly the child picks up reading. After that it is just a reading book on its own. If a child is still struggling hwoever flashcards will still be used for words they find harder - there is a girl in DD's Y2 class who has some flashcards to accompany her book for example.

We've never had word cards. Just reading books, since Reception.

Take your points that they aren't used now in Yr 1, in fact once past the high frequency words if they get there earlier in reception.
2 years ago they did continue throughout yr 1 & some even did them in year 2 to learn the next words. We used to have 32 per level, 6 levels in each colour and about 4 colours.

Just interested to see if this reflects a change in the National approach to teaching reading.
