How much reading does your reception child have to do?

Around here it seems polarized with some children getting a new book every day and in other schools nothing at all yet.

I'm sure this has been asked before!

We are in week 3. I think that at the moment they are just trying to establish how many sounds each child knows. In the next couple of weeks those that know most of their letter sounds will be given a reading book. On top of that we are also given a book a week to take home and look at together, but they aren't necessarily expected to read them.

As far as I can work out schools seem to use a wide variety of reading schemes and teaching methods, so it doesn't surprise me that schools do things on different timetables. (Although I would be surprised if schools were starting formal reading lessons on day 1).

We have one or two books sent home everyday although it is not compulsory to read them.
DD loves reading though and we tend to read the school ones at least 3 times each.

Nothing yet but Reception only started last week. After half-term they will get, each week, a formal reading book, and a free choice picture book for parents to read. Plus about 3 jolly phonics to learn/write/colour in.

We have plenty of books at home, library books, comics, the back of cereal packets and DS2's favourite - the lego catalogue(!) so I'm not really fussed about what comes home in their bookbags.

It seems variable to me. When my daughter was in kindergarten i used to get 'notes' about reading at home if they thought we weren't doing enough.....but I would not be happy if she wasn't bringing anything home either. My older daughter also gets a lot but she is older.

we aren't getting books but we are getting word boxes and letter books
word box has a pack of word cards for DS1 to learn the spellings
the letter book is a mini exercise book with a big letter stuck on a page - we have to see how many words he knows that begin with that letter.

the contents are changed each friday if they pass their spelling/letter test - if not we stick with the same spelling/letters.

But "action words" to learn and the usual phonics.

Ds3 doesn't have books yet - they are learning the jolly phonics sounds atm one a day.

Within a few weeks my son could change his book whenever he wanted but DD could only change it twice a week. Drove me mad as she is a superb reader. She is in year one now and can change her book whenever she wants. She reads Year 2 level books.

Two books in book bag all the time (one story, one factual) which they get to change about twice a week - for parents to read with them.

They also get a number of 'high frequency' words to learn by playing a game - once they know ten or more, apparently, they get given a reading book. We've jsut finished week 3, and dd knows her ten, more or less, but no one has a reading book yet AFAIK.

There's steady learning but no pressure going on, as far as I can tell.

None, none until after Xmas.

2 books, 3 times a week and two sounds to do in their phonics scrap book once a week.

DD can choose a book every wednesday and friday.
One from a pre-approved box in her classroom and the other from the school library.

But its not a "reading book" just a book to bring home.

Like the others, they have been doing jolly phonics.
So far with letters S A P T I N M D and this week they have done the words in, at, is, it.

They are also doing a bit of sign language as one of the children in her class is deaf.
DD has picked up alot of it which I'm really pleased about.

When DD was in Reception (now in Y2) she read to a teacher or TA every day, plus brought her reading book every day too to read to us. They changed their book when they had finished it and was confident with it. With things like ORT where the first books are very short this was often once a day. This was the same in Y1 too. In Y2 they still read to a teacher daily but bring a school book home just once a week now.

That was from day 1 too. Children progress at own pace pretty much.

Dd2 got her first reading book today, they have library books for us to read once a week, and as I remember from dd1 last year, the reading book can be changed every day if you want, if child is happy etc, but if not no pressure. They start key words next week I think, just a bag of words to take home and practice.
