How many schoold have hymn practice?

I have just found out that dd1's school have started doing hymn practice.
I was really surprised and tbh I don't think most of the parents realise this. I don't feel comfortable with dd1 participating in this so will have to go and see the teacher this afternoon.
Now the school is not a faith school of any description, so I feel that I should have been informed about it.

Am I wrong or do most schools have hymn practice?

We have it. Communal singing is good for children, generally psychologically uplifting even if they don't believe in the theology behind the words.

DD's school does, plus a daily assembly, grace at lunchtime and they sing a goodbye prayer at hometime. It is a private prep school, CofE based.

We have it and it's called singing practice, so not just hymms.

Our kids have singing every week. Sometimes 'hymns' sometimes songs. Last week they did one that was 'I have a body, a very busy body, and on my body is a head. Nod nod nod goes my head etcetcetc'

Singing is fantastic for children. And there is nowhere near enough done in schools now, the more singing the better as far as I am concerned. We are really lucky in that ds1 and dd's school is REALLY hot on singing, but so many schools aren't.

Singing a hymn isn't going to brainwash your child, honestly!

OUrs have hymn practice, at least that is what it's called, but most of what they sing isn't hymns!

From what I can gather it is seperate to their music/singing lesson. So they are singing just hymns.

I know I have the right to withdraw her from this as she stays out of some assemblies when there is prayer & hymns already but I just know that the Head is going to kick off about it as he did before

Doesn't mean it is all hymns. My kids have 'music' or 'singing' as part of the curriculum. But one assembly a week is given over to 'whole school singing' which might be hymns or might be songs.

Why is it such an issue?

Yes ours is separate too. But despite its name, it's not all hymns. Check carefully what they actually sing, before wading in, maybe?

Spin how old is your daughter ? if she is young she might not even know what she is singing and for all you know she might even enjoy it as I know my dd does, if you withdraw her you might single her out from other children which is worse than singing a few hymns

Many schools have no tradition of music or communal singing at all: you should think yourselves lucky.

btw my husband is a Baptist Minister and I am a Christian, my boys have been to church & sunday school every week since they were born, and to lots of other Christian events too, as well as all their stuff at school.
ds1 (11) is an atheist and has been since he was 5 yrs-old

So don't worry about an odd bit of religious imagery or wording in song lyrics! Teach your dd to think for herself and draw her own conclusions. It's not a cult brainwashing them you now.

Oh, this is probably no help but this thread has just taken me back to hymn practice at school, I absolutely loved it. I have grown up to be completely non-religious, but still go to church at Christmas to have a good sing song at the carol service.
