dd1 is staying for school dinners for the first time today <thank god> any tips for her?

does she have to empty her own plate and put it away? she cannot reach the bin. will there be a teacher/dinner lady to help?

she wants salmon and a sandwhich but no potato will she be allowed?

and more to the point will they watch what she eats?

i dont want them to hover over dd1 i know they have lots of children to look after and im not expecting dd1 to get special treatment but she has had trouble with eating and her weight and the school ar aware of this. so will they watch what she is eating and let me know if she is not eating like i have asked them to? or is that unrealistic?

Hello, in my DS school - they stand in a line and are given a prison tray (iykwim) with compartments. They got to the counter and the dinner lady will tell them what the choices are, they choose main meal and pudding or yoghurt or fruit. After they have licked their plate clean, they take it back to another counter to be cleared away.

The lunchtime assistants in my experience and very kind and will help anyone looking lost. Your DD will have friends there too and I'm sure she will follow the rest of them

I doubt they will be able to let you know if your DD is eating everything, in my DS primary school (450 pupils) is isn't feasible, but they do encourage the DC to eat (I went to a 'have school lunch with your kids' day last term.)

Please don't worry - the lunchtime assistants will always be looking out for the new ones at the beginning to term to help !

thanks northumberlandlass. wrt to her eating i felt like i couldnt win. high fat things such as crisps, cheesestrings etc are banned from packed lunches though the school said they would make allowances for her because she is underweight. but i was worried about her getting bullied as the only one allowed to bring these things in.

but with school dinners i cant see what she is or rather isnt eating. she is easily distracted and there are lots of better things for her to do than eat i.e. chatter to her friends.

she has been better since starting school so hopefully it wont be a problem. ill have a word with her teacher after school

thanks lsa2. they did say that they would keeo an eye on what she was eating and let me know if she wasnt eating or only eating small amounts. they also said they would encourage her to eat if she was struggling. i just didnt know if they would actually have the time to do this.

i would totally understand if they didnt. i know how much work they have. mil used to be a dinner lady.

i suppose if she doesnt eat she will just have to hungry and we will try and manage her weight better at home. there is nothing else i could do really.
