School dinners now cost £2

This seems an awful lot to me - it will surely put people off giving their kids school dinners when a packed lunch can be made for MUCH less. If my two were having school dinners every day it would be £20 a week! And once ds2 is at school, £30 a week.

Any thoughts?

Wow mine is so much more than the UK 3E85 which with the current exchange rate is about £3.00 a day and I have to do that for two. They're not allowed packed lunches either and school is too far away for me to bring them home for lunch. School lunches are by far and away my biggest outgoing every month (and then the kids wonder why I get cross when they say they didn't eat it). They do get three courses though and generally it's decent quality, but I'm a bit shocked at the difference in prices between the UK and France.

£1.15 here in Glasgow. And in primary schools at least, they only have "healthy" choices (eg no chips).

£9.50 a week here, DS had them for reception. Asked him if he wanted them again or sandwiches for Y1 but he says he likes the dinners. They are not bad meals, plenty of fruit to choose from but not large portions but he has a cooked meal in the evening anyway.

Packed lunch I cant see working out that much cheaper, by the time I've paid for a loaf (around £1.30 now), chicken to go on sandwich, fresh juice cartons, apples and grapes etc probably not that much difference in it.

He's far more adventurous with food at school than at home so i'm glad he prefers the dinners. Plus I hate daily sandwiches myself as feel it gets a bit mundane eating the same thing every day.

Cafeteria style with a mains hot choice or baked potato with choice of filling.

They also do a snack pack for £1.90 which is pretty much like a packed lunch.

DD goes on a Monday and Thursday usually as those are the days when she has after school clubs so tea is a pretty rushed affair.

tortoiseshell - my ds has grapes sometimes too! Friday they came home without being eaten. I instantly started to scoff them myself, was half way through and asked him why he didn't want them - he said they'd all fallen on the dinner room hall floor, serves me right for being greedy I suppose

But they are fantastic

They source the food properly and cook really healthy stuff, everything is stuffed with veggies.

Full salad and fruit salad bar, organic yoghurt etc they can help themselves to.

Ours are £1.85 at our new school (SE) ds think they are great. cooked on premises, only healthy options AND they are only allowed to leave the table when they have eaten sufficent. At our last school, they could pick what they wanted and leave it all...Hence when ds2 was in reception he would choose, potato, plain pasta and bread for lunch!!!! Now that did make me . If you are paying for lunch the dc should be given lunch (all of it) imo

Walkthedinosaur - yes I think £2 is cheap too! We pay 4.20 euros, which is about £3.25

Ds1 starts school next week, and his work out at £1.40. It is cooked on premises, and the school focus on lunch being a sociable event.
Plus ds1 loves lunchtime (it's when he eats the most, so I think I've got a bargain!)
