With ds2 starting school this term I am thinking of volunteering at schools and have an idea to maybe teach a foreign language which I have studied to undergraduate degree level to primary children during the lunch hour on a voluntary basis. I would be interested in opinions and suggestions on how to go about it.

Go in and ask. Only way to find out if they need someone with that kind of expertise. They may already have a language specialist, but even if they have they my still like someone willing to do a club.

On the whole I find schools are very happy to have volunteers in.

I go into DD's school, to work with the infant classes, twice a week. I do it vountarily and unpaid, but I love it. I am actually a qualified teacher, although secondary and no longer working as a teacher, but I get a real buzz from being in school witht he little ones.

Go for it! Send letters or just call them up. I started volunteering 1 day a week at a local primary school and after a few months they offered me a part time support job and now I have a 2 year contract full time supporting a girl with EBD and I love it.
